Montgomery police chief discusses improvements in department

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys has addressed several improvements as he marks one year leading the department.

At his monthly briefing yesterday, he announced the launch of a new SWAT Lateral Program, designed to hire professionals ready to take on the city’s crime.

A new program is also in the works related to retention and recruitment bonuses for officers to help grow the department.

Additionally, Graboys announced the department has 84 people in the process to become police officers or professional staff.

“We are going to be implementing a retention and recruitment bonus to our officers that will apply to lateral hires. It will apply to new hires who successfully complete the police academy, and I will apply to the officers and the men and women who are sworn in this police department to retain that expertise and that skill level that they have brought all these years to us,” Graboys said.
