WEATHER AUTHORITY: Strong to severe storm threat through the afternoon

We have the potential for severe weather impacting our area tonight through Saturday afternoon. Once the rain departs, we’re transitioning into a colder weather pattern and it will be sticking around for a while.

In the meantime, several waves of storms are expected to move through, bringing the risk for severe weather. The primary threats will be damaging straight-line winds and the potential for a brief tornado. In addition, some storms will be capable of producing very heavy rainfall.  Rainfall totals will vary, but some locations could see 2 to 4 inches of rain, with a few isolated areas possibly exceeding 5 inches. The heaviest rainfall is expected to fall across Central and West Alabama in a relatively narrow swath, which could lead to localized flooding concerns.

The rain departs Saturday afternoon and the colder air will begin spilling into the state overnight into Sunday.  Sunshine returns but temps only manage the 50s Sunday afternoon. High pressure builds over the area and we’re under a clear sky Sunday night into Monday.  The winds weaken and temps plunge into the upper 20s to lower 30s by Monday morning. It’s a colder weather pattern that will stick around through the work week.

Next, make sure you have more than one way to get weather alerts. A NOAA weather radio in addition to your phone (with your emergency alerts turned on) make for a good combination. Do not depend on sirens to keep you protected.

Know where to go inside your home if severe weather is imminent. If you live in a mobile home, you need to find sturdy shelter somewhere else. Plan now for what you will do.

Action 8 News will bring you live coverage on-air, online and on your phone. We will be staffed around the clock until the severe weather threat passes.
