Ft. Deposit preparing for city election “re-do” following problems in 2025

Voters in Fort Deposit will be going to the polls once again after a judge threw out some results of the city’s August 2025 municipal election.

As Action 8 News has reported, those results of the mayor’s race and the District 2 town council race were thrown out because of the discovery of hundreds of illegal absentee votes. Questions were first raised last September, which led to a lawsuit filed by the town attorney.

In October, another election was set for Tuesday, January 13, for voters to decide those two races.

Two council members who ran unopposed in last year’s election have been running the town since November. Last Friday, they hosted a town hall meeting and a meet-the-candidates forum to help voters prepare.

“We decided this would be a good thing to do, is to let the people just really, we haven’t had a meeting now for two or three months, and just let them know how the town is running,” Darrell Heartsill, a council member who is serving as mayor pro tem, told Action 8 News.

“The newly-elected officials will take office after the canvassing takes place and a time period for any contests that would need to be filed expires, and then the new administration can take office. We hope to swear them in as soon as we possibly can. But we look for a regular meeting to take place in March,” Fort Deposit town attorney Arlene Richardson said.

Polls will be open from 7AM until 7PM on Tuesday, January 13. Look for results on Action 8 News.
