Vending machine with books for children installed at Autauga County Courthouse
A new vending machine has been installed at the Autauga County Courthouse in Prattville — but instead of having snacks or sodas, it features books for children.
The Autauga County Children’s Policy Council had the machine installed. Children can select from a wide variety of free children’s books with tokens passed out by courthouse security and District Judge Jessica Sanders.
The vending machine not only encourages reading among young students, but also provides them a nice distraction if they are at the courthouse to be a part of a trial or other official business.
“We always want to do what’s in the best interest of kids that are at the courthouse and we just thought this is one small contribution to doing what’s best for kids,” Judge Sanders said.
The vending machine was purchased with a literacy grant from the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education.
