Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., remembered with events in downtown Montgomery

The life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was remembered with events in downtown Montgomery on the federal holiday in his memory.

The day began with a parade through downtown, starting from Catoma Street up to the Alabama Capitol. The parade included floats and band performances from all of Montgomery’s public high schools. Students from E.D. Nixon Elementary School also participated in the parade.

After that, a Family and Fun Unity Day was held at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl. This event had vendors and activities for people of all ages.

Organizers say it’s especially important that people in Montgomery remember Dr. King’s work in the city. He was pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church from 1954-1960 and helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-56. Later, after moving from Montgomery, he returned to help lead the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights marches of 1965.
