ALEA urges caution ahead of winter weather

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is urging drivers statewide to be prepared for the impacts of winter weather on the roadways this weekend.

Troopers say freezing temperatures combined with rain or moisture could create hazardous conditions, including black ice and slick roadways.

ALEA says if you are planning to travel this weekend, now is the time to prepare your vehicles and emergency supplies.

Tips include keeping your gas tank full. You should pack an emergency supply kit which should include blankets, flashlights, a first aid kit, and snacks. ALEA says to make sure you have a full charged cell phone and cell phone charger with you.

Drivers should also remember that hazardous conditions aren’t limited to snow-covered roads. You should make sure you vehicle is prepared, as well, by making sure your antifreeze levels and tire levels are where they need to be.

Other tips include giving yourself plenty of time to get to your destinations and avoid traveling when hazardous conditions develop. You are also encouraged to slow down and give yourself extra following distance on wet, icy, and slick roads.
