Troy university honors alumnus & trustee john harrison
Dozens gathered at Trojan Arena to honor alumnus John Harrison and dedicate their practice facility to him today.
The event kicked off with the band and cheerleaders welcoming people to the dedication. Multiple speakers came to the podium to share remarks about Harrison which included Troy Chancellor Jack Hawkins and former Troy Basketball Coach Don Maestri, among others.
Harrison was given a certificate honoring his work at Troy University, a plaque from Troy Mayor Jason Reeves praising his commitment to the community of Troy, and another plaque from Troy University that will hang outside of the practice facility that is now named after him.
“In 1992, John was recognized as ‘Distinguished Alum of the Year,’ and then he came on to our Board of Trustees in 1995. He has served this university in so many ways. He was Mayor of Luverne at one time for 15 years. He was president of the first Citizens Bank of Luverne, and then he became the Superintendent of Banks in Alabama, which is a very trusted position. He holds the record as being the longest serving superintendent,” said Troy Chancellor Jack Hawkins.
In 1992, when Harrison won ‘Distinguished Alum of the Year,’ he was selected out of 175,000 alumni across the country at the time. The practice facility inside Trojan Arena is now named “The John Harrison Center.”
