Rash of thefts reported at vacant homes for sale in Montgomery

23crimestoppers

The Montgomery Area Association of Realtors is warning of a recent rise in thefts at vacant homes that are listed for sale.

According to CrimeStoppers, during the fourth quarter of 2025, several homes in the River Region had major appliances and equipment stolen, including refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and even pool equipment.\

Most of the homes targeted were actively listed for sale or rent. In many cases, the properties had active listings on the market.

In addition to theft, many of these incidents involve significant vandalism. Wood floors have been scratched and damaged as heavy appliances are dragged out of homes. Locks and windows have also been broken as thieves force entry into the properties.

MAAR urges anyone affected by this type of crime to file a police report immediately and take proactive steps to protect their property.

Recommended safety measures include:
• Installing ample exterior security lighting
• Notifying neighbors to watch for suspicious activity
• Installing security cameras or hidden game cameras
• Placing AirTags or other trackable devices inside appliances while the home is actively
listed

Realtors, listing agents, and homeowners are strongly encouraged to take these precautions to reduce the risk of theft and property damage.

If you or someone you know suspects a theft of this type, contact local law enforcement immediately.
