Bridge Crossing Jubilee: List of events

23bridgecrossingjubilee

A long list of events are scheduled for the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee in Selma, which commemorates the voting rights marches of 1965.

This is the 61th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965, when marchers were beaten and severely injured just across the Edmund Pettus Bridge as they tried to walk from Selma to Montgomery in support of voting rights. Later that month, marchers made a successful march and their efforts helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Tens of thousands of people gather in Selma during the first week of March each year for several days’ worth of events.

Jubilee has brought Presidents to Selma, as well as presidential candidates and other nationally-known figures. This year’s lineup includes Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The event will also remember the life and work of Rev. Jesse Jackson, who died earlier this year and who was a frequent visitor to the Bridge Crossing Jubilee over the years.
