Autauga County Sheriff’s Office receives grant to purchase defibrillators

The Autauga County Sheriff’s Office has received a grant to purchase defibrillators.

The grant was made awarded through the Alabama Sheriff’s Association utilizing funds from the Opioid Settlement.

Sheriff Mark Harrell says the funding allowed his department to equip patrol deputies with Automated External Defibrillators, or AEDs.

AEDs are used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The easy-to-use medical device can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

“AEDs have been proven in allowing our deputies to respond effectively while assisting the Autauga County Fire Firefighters and medical personal, said Sheriff Harrell. “We are thankful for everyone involved in allowing us to obtain this critical lifesaving equipment. Our commitment remains unchanged: to protect the citizens of Autauga County, to support the dedicated law enforcement professionals who serve them, and to ensure that our deputies meet the standards of safety and justice our community deserves”.

According to the American Heart Association., more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital each year.
