Members of the Interfaith Alliance of Central Alabama held a rally outside the Alabama State House today to oppose bills involving religion in schools.

The group says it opposes a bill for school prayer, for a school chaplain and for the 10 Commandments to be displayed in schools.

They say if the bills are passed, they would unconstitutionally force religious practices into Alabama schools, infringing on the rights of public school students, their families and faith communities.

“Imposing these bills would create a further hardship to our students of diverse religious beliefs in our state, and so it is essential that we protect their beliefs and protect their families and their parents’ choice, and making those decisions about which faith community they are a part of and which doctrine they are exposed to,” Rev. Julie Conrady, president of the Interfaith Alliance of Central Alabama, said. She is also the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham.
