The City of Luverne will receive a $150,000 grant to help make improvements so that a business can begin construction.

Gov. Kay Ivey has announced the Community Development Block Grant, which is coming from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The city will contribute $37,500 for the project.

The grant will be used for upgrades needed for a new Cenergy Oil & Gas station on U.S. Highway 331 at Glenwood Avenue. The Andalusia-based company plans to employ 15 people at its new location.

“I am pleased to see a thriving Alabama business expand and bring new jobs to the area,” Gov. Ivey said. “This new service center will be in a prime location, provide an economic boost in Luverne and offer a new fuel and shopping option to travelers and residents alike.”

The project will include the extension of water and sewer service to the site and street improvements to ensure safe access to the new business. Cenergy will build the nearly 3,000-square-foot gas station. The improvements will also make it possible for future development in the area.

In addition to fuel service and a convenience store, Cenergy gas stations feature an outdoor retail store called Fletcher’s and a restaurant called Corner Market. The company currently employs 56 people at its three locations.
