Police announce arrest in triple shooting in Montgomery

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys has announced an arrest in a triple shooting as he presents updated crime statistics during his media briefing today.

Graboys announced that one of the three suspects police were looking for in a triple shooting that happened on March 15 on South Court Street has been arrested. He says a 17-year-old is being charged with assault first degree, firing a gun into an occupied building, firing a gun into an occupied vehicle, and firing a gun into an unoccupied vehicle.

Looking at recent crime statistics, Graboys says year-to-date, violent crime is down 16%, robberies are down 38% and property crimes are down 17.2%.

He says more than 1,500 people have been arrested, and between January 5 and March 13 of this year, 131 people responsible for more than 243 felonies have been taken into custody and charged.

Graboys says 21 of those arrests have been charged with three or more felonies.

He says 16 juveniles have been charged as adults for a wide variety of crimes including robbery, kidnapping and attempted rape.

Graboys also addressed efforts to hire more police officers. He says the city is offering a $15,000 signing bonus as an incentive. In addition, an education incentive is being offered for officers by local universities including AUM, Faulkner and Troy.
