Four killed in 48 hours during violent weekend in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) — Four people were killed in a series of shootings over a 48-hour period in Montgomery, prompting the city’s police chief to condemn the violence as “senseless.”

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys said during a Sunday afternoon press conference that officers responded to seven violent incidents between April 10 and April 12. The incidents included four homicides and three assaults involving firearms.

Graboys said investigators determined the shootings were not related. However, in each of the four fatal cases, the victims and suspects were known to one another.

“I’m angry,” Graboys said. “These killings are senseless.”

The violence began Friday, April 10, when 28-year-old Martavious Langford was shot at 12:26 p.m. in the 1000 block of West South Boulevard. Langford later died at a local hospital. Police arrested 30-year-old Adrian Jackson. Jackson was charged with capital murder.

Early Saturday, April 11, at 12:47 a.m., a juvenile female was treated at a hospital after being grazed by a bullet. Investigators said the shooting occurred in the 2700 block of North Belt Drive.

Later that morning, at 2:23 a.m., 35-year-old Andre Smith was fatally shot in the 900 block of Grove Street. An unidentified woman was also shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police reported two additional nonfatal shootings Saturday evening. At 7:45 p.m., an unidentified man was seriously injured in a domestic-related shooting in the 4000 block of Rosa L. Parks Avenue. At 10:26 p.m., another unidentified man was seriously injured in a shooting in the 3400 block of Fountain Circle.

Two more fatal shootings occurred shortly after midnight Sunday. At 12 a.m., 48-year-old Pendarvis Williams was shot and killed in the 1000 block of Day Street Road. Just minutes later, at 12:03 a.m., 21-year-old Tori Kelly Jr. was fatally shot in the 6300 block of Wares Ferry Road.

Police said multiple firearms were recovered from the scenes and will be tested as part of the investigations.
