Cupertino, Calif. (WAKA) – Apple CEO and Alabama native Tim Cook is stepping down after more than a decade leading the tech giant.

Cook, who grew up in Mobile and graduated from Auburn University, is credited with leading Apple to become a $4 trillion company after taking over for Steve Jobs in 2011.

In a statement, Cook said it has been the greatest privilege of his life “to be lead such an extraordinary company.”

Cook helped make Apple a significant player beyond its iconic products into areas including entertainment and health.

Notable is the Apple Watch, which was the first new product category that was launched under Cook’s leadership.

The company often touts the watch as a life-saving device.

John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will take over as CEO in September.

Cook will move into the role of Executive Chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors.
