8 ON YOUR SIDE CONSUMER ALERT: Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam

8 ON YOUR SIDE CONSUMER ALERT (WAKA) – The Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a scam that is targeting people by phone.

Someone is calling people, claiming to be from the sheriff’s office and saying that the person owes fines ranging from $1,000 to $1,500. The phone number used in the scam is even the phone number from the sheriff’s office, which may make the call seem legitimate.

Wilcox County Sheriff Larry Colson says that this call is a scam. He says his department will never call you to say that you owe a fine.

Colson says many of these phone call scams originate from outside of the U.S. and the scammers can spoof any telephone number they want.
