Prattville man charged with attacking off-duty officer in Montgomery Walmart
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A Prattville man has been charged with attacking an off-duty police officer who was working in the Ann Street Walmart in Montgomery.
According to court records, the attack happened just after 11:30AM yesterday.
An Alabama State University police officer was working an off-duty job at the store when court records say 20-year-old Donovan Caldwell went in with a backpack with the intent to shoplift.
Court records say that when loss prevention workers notified the officer that Caldwell had put items into his backpack, the officer confronted him. The two tussled to the ground.
Records state the officer said Caldwell hit him in the face, causing abrasions on his face, arm and legs. Shoppers helped the officer detain Caldwell until police arrived.
Caldwell has been charged with second-degree assault. He’s in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a $7,500 bond.
