Dallas Co. Sheriff primary winner has a chance to make history

The winner of the democrat primary in the Dallas County Sheriff’s race has a chance to make history in the general election.

Dewayne Sanders defeated Willie Calhoun to win the democrat primary on Tuesday.

Sanders is a retired state trooper and Dallas County deputy with 28 years of law enforcement experience. He says he came out of retirement to run for sheriff — to try and make a difference in the community.

Although there are no republican candidates in the race — Sanders will go up against two independent candidates in the general election.

A victory in November would make him the first black sheriff in the history of Dallas County.

“I really hadn’t thought about history when I first started running,” said Sanders.

“I ran on making the community safer, getting involved in the community, and protecting the community, serving them, that’s why, I ran for sheriff. But being the first to make history, no it never crossed my mind, but now that I know about it, yeah, I’m excited.”

Sanders will face independent candidates — Lee Green, Jr. and Scott Swanson — in the general election November 3rd.
