Safe from the Storm: Alabama Power has new way to prepare for power outages

SAFE FROM THE STORM (WAKA) – Tropical weather often leads to power outages. Alabama Power has a new way to prepare for those outages, long before a storm comes through our area.

Its new tool, called SPEAR, uses historical data from other storms to help the company predict where power outages may happen and how many there could be.

When a storm forms in the Gulf or the Atlantic, SPEAR can help pinpoint the intensity, timing and location that will be hardest hit in our area. Its modeling will help company leaders put repair crews in the right place at the right time. They can even get advanced notice on whether crews from outside the Alabama Power service area might be needed.

Watch the video above from Action 8 Meteorologist Ben Lang to learn more about how SPEAR works.
