ACTION 8 UPDATE: Body of missing boater recovered from Tombigbee River
SUMTER COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – The body of a missing boater has been recovered from the Tombigbee River in Sumter County.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says the body of 48-year-old Damond Driggers of the Washington County town of Millry was recovered from the river near Gainesville at around 8:10AM today. ALEA says this location wasn’t far from where he fell into the water.
Investigators say Driggers had been operating a 17-foot aluminum duck boat when he went overboard at around midnight yesterday morning. They say Driggers was not using an emergency cutoff switch and was also not wearing a personal flotation device.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division responded to the scene and began conducting search operations. They were suspended late last night, but resumed this morning.
ALEA said it would like to thank and recognize the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as well as a multitude of volunteers that assisted in the search and recovery effort.
