Montgomery man dies while in custody of Muscle Shoals police

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (WAKA) – Muscle Shoals police say a Montgomery man has died while in their custody.

Police say 49-year-old Kristopher Whitehurst was arrested for public intoxication Wednesday night, July 1.

Police say during a routine check last night, Whitehurst appeared to be having a medical emergency and could not verbally answer questions. Police say the fire department and EMS were called to the jail to help. They say Whitehurst was taken to the Shoals Hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will investigate the death, as is standard procedure.
