Tanker fire leads to shutdown of Interstate 65 ramp in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – Smoke could be seen for miles when a tanker caught fire in Montgomery County, which led to the closure of an Interstate 65 exit ramp.

The fire happened around noon on Saturday, July 4. It caused the southbound Exit 164 ramp from Interstate 65 to U.S. Highway 31 to be closed for several hours.

Montgomery Fire/Rescue responded to a mutual aid request from the Pintlala Volunteer Fire Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to help put out the fully-involved tanker fire.

The tanker was carrying about 9,000 gallons of gasoline.

The Montgomery County EMA, the Alabama Department of Transportation and the power company also helped with the incident.
