Montgomery man convicted of sexually abusing child
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A Montgomery man has been convicted of child sexual abuse.
Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver says Barry Purdie faces life in prison for sodomizing and sexually assaulting a girl over a two-year period when she was between the ages of 8 and 10.
A jury found Purdie guilty of sodomy in the first degree and sexual abuse of a child younger than 12. He is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Tiffany McCord on August 3.
Oliver praised the young survivor for the bravery and resilience she demonstrated while testifying, expressing hope that the verdict brings a measure of peace and healing to her and her family.
“Barry Purdie robbed a precious child of her innocence as well as her sense of trust and security. The harm he inflicted extends far beyond the physical, leaving her to cope with deep emotional trauma that may never fully fade. We will be asking for the maximum sentence allowed to ensure that this vile individual is never able to harm another child again,” Oliver said.
