ACTION 8 UPDATE: State office building now bears the name of Gov. Kay Ivey

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A prominent state government building in downtown Montgomery now bears the name of Gov. Kay Ivey.

The Attorney General’s Office Building has been renamed the Kay Ivey Office Building, with the final letters now in place. The building is at the corner of Dexter Avenue and South Bainbridge Street, directly across the street from the Alabama Capitol and the Lurleen B. Wallace Office Building.

The building was constructed in 1937. It was originally the State Highway Building before becoming the Public Safety Building. The five-story building was last renovated in 2007.

Ivey is Alabama’s second female governor, following Gov. Lurleen Wallace, who served from 1967-68, dying during her term.

The Alabama Building Renovation Finance Authority approved the renaming earlier this year after the Alabama Legislature passing a resolution urging this action.

It was April 10, 2017, that Ivey became governor. She has served the longest continuous time as governor in Alabama history.

She was lieutenant governor at the time and rose to the office upon the resignation of then-Gov. Robert Bentley.

Ivey’s term will expire in January 2027. At that time, she will have served nearly 10 years.
