Montgomery police involved in shooting while arresting suspects

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – A Montgomery police officer has been involved in a shooting while trying to arrest suspects.

Police say just before 10:30 this morning, officers were trying to stop a vehicle with three people inside who were of interest in an assault investigation. A pursuit ended near the intersection of Birmingham Highway and West Boulevard, where police say the three people ran away.

Police say during a foot chase, one suspect pulled out a gun. That’s when an officer fired at the suspect in self-defense. Police say the suspect had a life-threatening injury and was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment.

No police officers were hurt.

The other two suspects were captured. Police say several high-capacity guns were recovered on scene.

Police say in accordance with department policy and to protect the investigation, no further details or names will be released at this time. The investigation has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Police say any other information would be released by the State Bureau of Investigation.
