Well-known Montgomery businessman Raymond Cohen dies at 95
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Montgomery native and well-known businessman Raymond Cohen has died at 95.
Cohen passed away Wednesday. His family business, Cohens, has long been a landmark shopping destination on Eastern Boulevard for people wanting to buy televisions, appliances and other items.
Cohen was born on August 2, 1931. He graduated from Lanier High School and attended the University of Alabama. While pursuing his education, his family says Raymond discovered that his greatest joy was working alongside his father in the family business, Cohen Amusement Company.
In 1957, Raymond opened The Record Shop in Normandale Shopping Center. It evolved into Cohens, a beloved local institution that proudly carried the family name beginning in 1988. For decades, Raymond built lasting relationships with customers and friends who became an extended part of his family.
Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Miriam Franco Cohen, who passed away in 1998, and other family members.
He is survived by his wife, Kathie Cohen; his three sons, Michael, Joel and David, and their families.
The funeral was held this morning at Leak Memory Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted at Temple Beth Or, Agudath Isreal Etz Ahayem Synagogue and the Boy Scouts.
