Tuskegee University celebrates receiving $1 million donation
TUSKEGEE, Ala. (WAKA) – Tuskegee University has received a huge donation that’s given to only a dozen colleges across the country.
The Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity has pledged $1 million to Tuskegee University, as well as to 12 other historically black colleges nationwide.
The goal of the donations is to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the colleges.
Tuskegee University embraced the gift as another opportunity to get students into school.
Action 8 News caught up with Tuskegee University President and CEO Dr. Mark Brown as he spoke to the Montgomery Rotary Club to learn more about this gift.
“The United Negro College Fund has an endeavor called a shared endowment, and so many schools are taking their money, putting it together, so that collectively these small schools can have a larger endowment. Others who see that provide distribution to that endowment, and in this particular case, that additional distribution resulted in a total of $12 million, and a little over a million per school. We’re glad to get it, we’re glad to participate with it. We’re supportive of the United Negro College Fund and what it really does is it helps us get students in school and keep them in school. Most of that will go to the financial reward of those students so that they can register for school,” Brown said.
Alabama is the state getting the most donations. Along with Tuskegee, other schools receiving this funding include Miles College, Oakwood University and Stillman College.
