Brickus chosen first permanent black female police chief in Selma

The Selma City Council has chosen a historic new police chief.

The council picked Chief Ettice Brickus — to lead the Selma Police Department at a special called meeting Thursday evening.

Brickus currently serves as the Chief of Staff at the Montgomery Police Department.

She hold extensive experience in Neighborhood Patrol — Investigations — Special Events — Recruitment — Juvenile and Adult Intake — and Records Management.

She also brings specialized knowledge in administrative operations and strategic planning.

Brickus was chosen as the city’s next police chief by a 5-3 vote of the council.

She will become the city’s first permanent black female police chief.

“We had four amazing candidates and I don’t think we could have gone wrong with either of them. But it’s important that we support her. It’s important that the council stands behind her, that my office stands behind her, that the police department stands behind her, and our citizens stand behind her,” said Selma Mayor Johnny Moss, III.

Moss says the next step in the process is to work out the details of a contract.

He says the city would like to get that done — and get her on the job — as soon as possible.
