Spectrum outage in Montgomery being investigated as a criminal act
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The recent Spectrum outage in the Montgomery area is being investigated as a criminal act.
Spectrum officials tell Action 8 News that one of the fiber optic lines in the area of the 4200 block of Sherman Way in Montgomery was intentionally cut in a criminal attack on the infrastructure.
The damage caused a temporary outage for residents and businesses in the area. The service has been since restored to the area.
“Criminal attacks on communications infrastructure have become an industrywide concern, not just for Spectrum. These acts are crimes and also endanger public safety by potentially impacting connectivity to emergency services,” the company said in statement.
Spectrum officials say in 2025, the broader telecommunications industry experienced more than 18,000 incidents nationwide, representing a 59% increase from 2024.
Spectrum is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about this act of vandalism can contact Spectrum at 833-404-TIPS (8477).
