Selma Main Street spruces up around historic Selma bridge

An Alabama Main Street grant is helping the city of Selma spruce up around one of its most iconic historic sites.

The Edmund Pettus Bridge is also one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions.

Thousands of visitors take pictures and walk across the bridge each year.

It anchors the downtown area — making it an obvious focal point for the downtown revitalization efforts of Selma Main Street.

“We used a great local team to do some power washing of sidewalks. And then to clear out the weeds in some of the beds,” said Executive Director Sarah Aghedo.

“They’re going to be doing two large planters for the downtown on either side of the base of the bridge as well as some other planters. It’ll just bring some seasonal color.”

Selma Main Street is hosting the first — 1st Saturday Farmer’s Market — this Saturday on Water Avenue. There will be a food truck — live music — art — and fresh produce.
