Marion Military Institute provides military service academy pipeline

Marion Military Institute is providing guidance for students interested in attending one of the country’s prestigious military service academies.

Service Academy Program Director — Lt. Col. Thomas Bowen — says MMI is the perfect stepping stone — into one of the nation’s service academies.

MMI helps students and their families better understand eligibility requirements — the academy admissions process — as well as the congressional nomination process.

“Each cadet that wants to go to West Point, Annapolis, Air Force or Merchant Marine Academy needs a nomination or endorsement from either a congressman, congresswoman or senator,” said Bowen.

“It’s a dual approach. You gotta apply to the academy, at the same time you need you need a nomination. And they’re both arduous. We help them in all respects to get that nomination, and then the appointment.”

Bowen says 57 MMI cadets were appointed to service academies last year. And 90 cadets are looking for appointments this year.

“This is a great place to become more competitive. If they can handle the academics here, chemistry, physics, pre-calculus, English composition, they’re going to do well at the academy,” Bowen said.

Congresswoman Terri Sewell along with a representative of Senator Katie Britt’s Office attended a joint information session at the MMI campus this afternoon.
