Governor Ivey: Two people dead after Hurricane Isaias

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Governor Kay Ivey has announced that two lives have been lost after Hurricane Isaias swept through the state Friday night into Saturday morning.

As the CBS affiliate in Birmingham has reported, one person was killed after a tree fell onto a house in Birmingham early Saturday morning.

Fire crews with Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene on Monterey Drive shortly after midnight and have remained on scene through Saturday morning.

Jefferson County EMA Director Jim Coker confirmed one person was killed in the resulting damage. There was another person trapped in the house.

The governor released a statement, saying:

“This storm cannot clear fast enough. It brought in heavy winds throughout Alabama, taking down trees, knocking out power and doing some damage. Unfortunately, we have also learned that two Alabamians have lost their lives. I am praying for their loved ones this morning.”

The governor says crews have been working hard to clean up debris, restore power, and assess the damage in communities.

”I offer my sincere thanks, too, for the various crews we have positioned throughout the state who have been diligently working to clear debris and restore power. That is the focus right now, and I am proud to report that all major roadways, including the ICW, have been reopened. There are still some road closures due to downed power lines, and our linemen are working to clear that as soon as possible. In Escambia County, for example, our folks are still working on reopening a portion of US-31 north of Brewton. Fellow Alabamians, please continue being smart today as cleanup continues. Safety for y’all is the main thing today.”.

Governor Ivey has also officially rescinded the supplemental state of emergency proclamation requiring the mandatory evacuation of non-residents in certain parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties.
