Grant funds storm shelter project in town of Gordonville
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
People in the town of Gordonville will soon have a place in town that they can go to — to keep them safe from the storm.
A $134-thousand dollar grant is funding a storm shelter project in Gordonville — that’s been three years in the making.
Mayor Orbuty Ross Ozier says the storm shelter will provide a sense of security — for residents.
“We looked at what we might be able to get, not even knowing really where the funding was coming from,” said Ozier.
“And I will be calling them today, and tell them funding have been approved. Come and get to work.”
Funding for the project comes from Project Red Clay — as part of a million dollar grant — dedicated to the betterment of Lowndes County.
“There was not a full stand alone storm shelter in the county. So, this will be the first one,” said Burton Crenshaw with Central Alabama Community Foundation.
“We have people that leave their, their homes to go stay with other folk during a storm. And we wanted them to have somewhere to go right in their own community,” said Ozier.
The storm shelter will be built behind the town hall near a grove on Trone Road.
