It’s a score that can make or break a restaurant especially when it comes to their customers.

“A lot of consumers are interested in the score. The Alabama Department of Public Health has published the scores for some years now on our website and we get a lot of visits to check the scores,” said Ron Dawsey, Deputy Director of Environemental Services.

And now a new app helps bring those scores to your fingertips.
It’s called “What the Health.”
It’s linked to the Department of Health’s website information and is updated several times a week.
We talked to one of the creators of the app.

“Basically the app is a location based app and its based on your GPS location and it will bring up the first 100 restaurants around you in the entire state of Alabama,” said Chris Peoples.

The app will tell you the last time it was inspected, the score, and where it’s located and even how to get there.

Peoples says the idea for “What the Health” came from looking for a place to eat in his hometown of Augusta, Georgia.

“Basically we were looking at all the different restaurants and we just decided that we should come up with something where people would be able to obtain this information faster,” said Peoples.

According to Environmental Services, restaurants are routinely inspected 3 times a year and more frequently if they have lower scores.

“We check for items, divided into critical and non-critical. Critical items would be more likely to cause an issue or directly related to an illness. Those would be things like temperature control, hand washing, stirring of toxic items in the restaurant,” said Dawsey.

It all makes up the health score…that’s now at your fingertips.

The app is free to download. There are also other states available as well.
