Golden Apple: Gwendolyn Cosby

It’s that time of week where we thank a local teacher for everything they do.Â
Â
This week, the Golden Apple award takes us to Hayneville in Lowndes County to meet a teacher who has made a huge impact not just on her students, but the entire community.
Â
Flip through almost any yearbook at Central High School, and you’ll see Gwendolyn Cosby. She has been teaching math here for 37 years.Â
Â
“I’ve taught some children’s grandmamas and they make it known-you taught my grandmama and you’re still here. when you can continue to make a difference in a family, it’s great,” Cosby said.
Â
Alabama News Network received more than 60 nominations for Cosby for our Golden Apple Award, a record-setting number. It was no surprise to her students, including Keith Rudolph, a former student of Cosby’s, who is now her colleague.Â
Â
“It really inspired me to become a teacher, Ms.Cosby. Just knowing that all these years, nothing’s changed. She’s still a great teacher, and all the kids love her,” said Rudolph, a collaborative teacher with special education students at Central High.Â
Â
When you ask Gwendolyn Cosby about retirement, she says it’s in her future, just not right now.Â
