Workers at Hyundai suppliers throughout the area are celebrating their contribution to the Montgomery plant, which is celebrating 10 years of building cars.

Many of those suppliers are in Crenshaw and Butler counties.

According to the Crenshaw County Development Authority, during the recession the county’s unemployment rate was nearly 9%. But thanks to suppliers like SMART expanding to meet high demand, those numbers dropped to 2.9%.

“You’re talking about putting 1,000, 1,200 people out on the streets all at once. So when this business came in, it’s absolutely the best thing to probably ever happen to Crenshaw County,” SMART plant manager Gary Sport told Alabama News Network.

Some suppliers say they hope to expand in the future, because their products are in high demand by Hyundai.
