Changes are coming to downtown Tallassee.

Renovations are set to begin on the historic Mount Vernon Theatre in July. Volunteers raised nearly half a million dollars for the project. Now people who live there are turning their attention to the abandoned buildings just blocks away from the theatre and Hotel Talisi, which shut down after an arson in 2009.

The good news is some downtown spaces are now occupied, and new business owners are hoping that trend continues.

“The more traffic that we have through here, the more people that will know about the businesses that are already here, and it will definitely just provide a boost for the entire community,” said Sherre Padgett, who recently opened an education consulting business downtown.

Mayor Bobby Payne says he believes plans are on track to repair, renovate, and reopen Hotel Talisi, which would have a big impact on this part of downtown.

“If things go like we hope, maybe we’ll go two, three years, something like that, I think it’s not that far,” said Payne.

Several of the renovations will be on display for the city’s “Tallassee Now” festival, which is a big celebration for the city.

That’s this Saturday and Sunday in the downtown area.
