The new Pike Road School opens in just 51 days and officials with the school system are working on getting everything squared away before the first day. This week, teachers are training at Auburn University of Montgomery, learning how to better teach students.

Pike Road Superintendent Suzanne Freeman says it’s important that all of her teachers are on the same page. She says they want students to receive the best education possible.

For 11 days, Pike Road teachers will be attending professional learning seminars, training for the upcoming inaugural school year. Monday morning, dozens of educators met at Auburn University of Montgomery to learn what they’re calling the “Pike Road Way.”

“Some of this is confirming for me what I was doing was on the right track and others is new for me.”

Catherine Kenny will be teaching 4th grade at the new school. She comes from Blount Elementary School in Montgomery, where she taught gifted children.

“We’re learning how to better engage our students. We’re working in teams, actually doing some project based learning ourselves, just to kind of get a feel for us to practice what it is we’ll be doing with our students.”

Superintendent Suzanne Freeman says the learning seminars are critical for the success of the new school.

“We feel that it is so important that we learn together to create this new culture.”

She says the goal is to have students take ownership of their learning.

“We talked a lot about student engagement, what that looks like, creating authentic work for students.”

Frazer United Methodist Church provided snacks and lunch for the teachers to show encouragement and support. Frazer will also have a partnership with the school, hosting Sunday services there beginning next year.

“The services will be held in the gym at the new Pike Road School and we’re excited,” says Student Minister Chase Faulk. “It’ll be a multi-site, where it’s one church but in different locations and so the Frazer family will extend there to Pike Road.”

Superintendent Freeman told me that Pike Road is going to be very different than traditional school and she wants to make sure both teachers and students are acclimated to the new way of learning.

The Pike Road School will have 54 teachers on staff this school year.
