UPDATE: State health officials say food poisoning is the suspected cause after 86 children became ill at a Montgomery day care. The state health officer says health officials have ordered Sunny Side Child Care Center’s two locations to remain closed as they try to determine the organism that made the children sick. Mother, Erica Shackleford, says she is upset no one told her.
“Didn’t let me know. Didn’t let me know at all. They just act like everything is okay,” said Shackleford.
Shackleford says she didn’t find out until she picked her daughter up.
“Normally when you pick up your kids, they’re all running around. You have to find your kids. One day you go and they all slumped over, stomach hurting. You wonder what’s wrong with them?”
Shackleford says she took her daughter to the hospital and found dozens of other children from the daycare there.
“Kids being so dehyrated to where they have to constantly drink fluids to gain their energy back. They have been puking and diarrhea. Messed the kids up.”
Shackleford says her daughter is doing okay. But she will have to stay the night at Baptist South just to be monitored.
She says her daughter won’t be going back to Sunnyside Child Care.
“Why wouldn’t you take your time out and sit down and make phone calls? That’s why we give you numbers for anything. If it happens, call us.”
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tom Miller says they are taking cultures and will take them back to the lab to determine exactly what it is that caused the outbreak. They believe it is something in the food they served at the daycare.
