It’s always a good day for city leaders when they can announce new jobs.
Sykes Enterprises is the latest looking to employ people in the river region, a business that operates call centers both nationally and internationally.
“We take customer care interactions for fortune 500 companies that we all would know. So if you’re calling someone for customer service or tech support, we handle those for companies,” said Rob Duncan, Sykes Enterprises North American Vice President.
The Tampa based company is setting up shop in a vacant building on the east side that used to house another call center.
The decision to move came down to three different cities, but Montgomery won out for an important reason.
“If you start with a person that already has that ingrained in them, you know, already being kind and nice, then you’re ahead of the game. So when we visited Montgomery it just came through that the culture here, right?? said Duncan.
Mayor Todd Strange says this announcement marks over 1000 jobs announced here this year.
He says the city has been courting Sykes for the better part of the last two years.
It means a lot, especially if you look back just five years.
The mayor says the city’s unemployment rate has dropped from about 12 percent to roughly 6 percent.
“What it really means is about 11 thousand more people are working today than they were 5 years ago. This year already, this will be about 11 hundred jobs. Some of them are new, some are expansions,” said Mayor Strange.
