Controversy Continues Over Pay Raises in Alexander City

Controversy continues over pay raises for city employees. City council members say they did not authorize the raises, which were approved by Mayor Charles Shaw.
According to council members, Shaw approved about $150,000 in raises to 24 city employees over several months. It is a small portion of the city’s budget, but council members have frozen pay raises while they sort out the issues.
they say the policy is supposed to ensure a fair playing field.
“Just to make sure the buddy-buddy system and the good old boy system isn’t in place, where he can give a raise to whoever he wants, and if he doesn’t like it, well, they don’t get a raise,” said Bobby Tapley, who serves on the council.
We reached out to Mayor Shaw for comment on this story, but he did not return our calls.
