This week, Montgomery’s main library branch is focusing on high schoolers.

The boot camp lasts all week and gives students like Erica Gage a chance to interact with college professors and technology.

“I kind of liked it the first time we did, all the stuff we did. We built robots the last time I was here. So I was just hoping we’d do more from what we did in the past,” said Gage.

This is the fourth year the library has put on the camp. While it might seem that libraries only give patrons a chance to check out books, Suzanne Horton says there’s so much to more it than just that.

“People think and still have this misconception that libraries are just books, dusty old encyclopedia brittanicas or something like that. But we have access to current databases, access to study guides for the ACT, the GRE, even fireman’s guides for adult professionals,” said Horton.

But the building does have it’s problems. The plan was to move to one dexter plaza as part of the questplex project, but that was abandoned last year.

The current building was originally built as a museum and wasn’t designed to house books. Horton says that creates a lot of problems.

“The infrastructure itself, we just have to deal with what we have until budgets open up and we get the funding that we need. We have some really great people in our administration that handle the budget that allow us with the budget that we have the resources we need to help people so we make due with what we have,” said Horton.
