From the West Alabama Newsroom–  The town of Pine Hill has a new police chief — and the appointment results in a couple of historic firsts for the small Wilcox County town.

Nikisha Gailes is the town’s first female police chief — and the town’s first black police chief.

“Its a good feeling and everyday I wake up thinking its just a dream,” said Gailes.

Gailes has more than 18 years of law enforcement experience — nine of which have been with the Pine Hill police department. She was appointed chief by the town council at its monthly meeting.

“She is very competent and very good to work with,” said Pine Hill mayor Roberta Jordan.

“We’re really excited about the future for the police department. We think she’s going to do great and the men all love working with her and for her. I think she has their respect.”

Gailes was also the town’s first female police officer when she joined the police force back in 2004.
