Mother of victim in fatal Selma nightclub shooting seeks justice
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A man accused in a deadly 2017 nightclub shooting is on trial for murder in Selma.
Shykereya Leggett was only 20 years old when she was violently taken away from her family — and her one year old son. The young mother was shot and killed as she was trying to leave Prime Ultra Lounge back in October of 2017.
Lakeisha Leggett is Shykereya’s mother. “It hurts,” said Leggett. “I cry every day.”
“No mom should have to bury their child. Our children aren’t burying us no more. You know, we’re burying our children. And it’s hard.”
“I am all cried out. I got these glasses on but I’m trying to hide all this puffiness and stuff with these eyes. All the pain, all the hurt I am exhausted behind all of this. I just want all of it to be done.”
But it won’t be done anytime soon. Because one of the two men accused in her daughter’s murder — is on trial this week.
“When they talk about it in the courtroom. Talk about the pictures, talk about this, the video, it hurts. You know, it just hurts.”
But Leggett says despite the pain — she’s going to see it through — until she gets justice for Shykereya.
“She was my best friend. I mean, we shared a lot.”
Juantonio Cosby of Selma is on trial in the case — facing murder and assault charges.
Co-defendant Kenneth Ingram of Selma was sentenced to 20 years in prison — after pleading guilty to manslaughter and assault last year.
