ACTION 8 UPDATE: Pike Road roundabout project taking next step
ACTION 8 UPDATE: The plan to put in three roundabouts to ease traffic congestion in Pike Road is about to take another step.
Action 8 News first reported on the proposed roundabouts in 2020.
One roundabout is planned for the intersection of U.S. Highway 80 and Marler Road. Work has not started yet.
But the Alabama Department of Transportation tells us the bid process should start later this year.
A second roundabout is proposed for U.S. Highway 80 at Highway 126. That is just off Interstate 85 at Exit 16, on the northbound side near the Eagle and Circle K gas stations.
This roundabout is also going out to bids this fiscal year. So far, there is no start date for construction on either roundabout.
The reason for the roundabouts is to help traffic flow smoother.
A third roundabout is planned on the opposite side of Interstate 85 at Exit 16, on the southbound side. That project would also include replacing the bridge over the interstate. That work is part of a separate phase, and we have no word on when bids might start for it.
