Bridge project shuts down a portion of Highway 14 in Dallas Co.

Dallas County officials want to get the word out — about an upcoming road closure — on a busy stretch of highway.

Highway 14 between Selma and Burnsville — will be shut down to through traffic for at least a year — starting next week.

Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn wants to alert public about the upcoming closure — so people won’t be caught by surprise. He says the shut down is necessary — so AL-DOT can replace two old bridges along the highway in Blue Gurth Swamp.

“And it’s been needed for a long time, and they will start putting the traffic control devices out there on February the 12th and February the 13th. And then on February the 14th that road, or a portion of 14 will be shut down.

Nunn says the road will be closed for at least a year. And traffic will have to detour onto River Road — from the Selma Bypass to Highway 14 in Burnsville.

“It’s going to add a little bit more time to your travel if your trying to reach your destination. So, leave a little bit early.”

Nunn says the project will totally replace and widen the bridges — and make traveling safer for motorists when it’s completed.

“This is good for Dallas County. This is an improvement. It takes a little time. But we’re asking the citizens of Dallas County to bear with us while AL-DOT make these improvements to our roads,” Nunn said.

The detour adds about 6 miles — to a trip from Selma to Burnsville. The trip will also take about 10 minutes longer.
