Greenville police say some families are facing funeral home scams

The Greenville Police Department is warning citizens about a funeral home scam that could be targeting families who may be going through one of the most difficult times of their lives. It’s called the funeral home scam, where scammers search local obituaries and through a method called spoofing, change their phone numbers to match that of a local funeral home and call the deceased next of kin asking for payment.

Scammers will then offer the option of unconventional payment such as PayPal or Venmo which should be a red flag for families as abnormal payment options for funeral services.

This scam covers several funeral homes, not just one, and could entail both giving and receiving funds.

If you receive a call or email asking for funds following the loss of a loved one don’t give any payments over the phone. Hang up and call the funeral home directly.
