UPDATE: Crash Involving Train, Tractor Causes Road Closure in Opelika

Update: The victim, a 27-year-old male, suffered massive internal injuries and died from those injuries at 5:57 PM in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at UAB. Police are investigating the accident and it is not clear how fast, or even if, the vehicle was moving when it was struck and thrown off the road by the westbound CSX train. There are working lights at the crossing but no cross arms. There were no other injuries or vehicles involved. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The accident remains under investigation by the Opelika Police and the Lee County Coroner’s office.

The Opelika Police Department responded to a call of an accident at Cunningham Dr. & CSX Railroad crossing. Police say a train collided with heavy construction equipment.

The driver of the equipment is being airlifted. The condition of the driver is unknown at this time.

Police ask that you advoid the area. The road will be blocked for several hours.
