Hundreds attend “This Side of the Bridge” at Riverwalk Stadium

People brought lawn chairs and blankets to Riverwalk Stadium Saturday night to attend a celebration called “This Side of the Bridge.” The evening of entertainment was called *This Side of the Bridge* because it highlights the foot soldiers on the Montgomery side of the Bridge during the Selma to Montgomery March to the Alabama Capitol in 1965.

Sheyann Webb Christburg – who Dr. King once called his “smallest freedom fighter”- spoke to the crowd. The main entertainment was provided by Grammy Award-Winning Gospel singer Leandra Johnson. Hundreds of people enjoyed the nice weather and the food trucks and vendors. The free event was open to all ages.

Gabriel Morley is Montgomery’s Director of Cultural Affairs and he says, ” This is really a part of Montgomery history that no one else can lay claim to. This is an important event annually, next year will be the 60th anniversary and we’re planning a big celebration and we’re glad people came out today to celebrate with us.” The City of Montgomery’s Cultural Affairs Department sponsored the celebration.
