SAVING SELMA: Family wins brand new 3 BR home in Selma
From West Alabama Newsroom–
A Selma family that lost their home in the January 2023 tornado — wins a new three bedroom — two bathroom home — for free.
Sixteen names were placed in a lottery — raffling off the new home. The winner won the home free and clear — and a whole lot more.
Just as you might expect — Tamicka Newberry lost it — when she heard her name called as the winner of a brand new house — at a home giveaway in Selma Sunday afternoon.
“Oh, when they called my name, I had to like, it had to register, cause I’m like, that’s my name they just called,” said Newberry.
“And then it just hit me all of a sudden. It was just joy, it was just joy, it’s a dream come true.”
The house is one of five new homes built in Selma by Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America.
“High quality homes, nine foot ceilings, beautiful lighting, open floor plan, all that,” said NACA CEO Bruce Marks.
The home giveaway is a way to raise awareness about the effort to revitalize neighborhoods — by making it easier for people to become homeowners. As well as provide tornado victims — with the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
“This is our why. This is why we do what we do” said Kennard Randolph with Selma Housing Authority.
“Self sufficiency is a part of our mission.”
Newberry found out Monday that the Selma Housing Authority is also buying new furniture for her new home. As well as paying the first year — of homeowner’s insurance.
